Growing up out in Malvern, we rarely went into town. If momma needed something she would get it on her lunch break during the week. But one lucky weekend, I remember we went into town to shop for school clothes so naturally we went to the Sears downtown. I was about eight, so I was big enough that she couldn’t buy clothes without me trying them on. That was the day I had my first cheese danish at the lunch counter. To this day having one instills a sense of importance or reverence for me and I’ve never forgotten it.
